Dog news: World’s first newt detection dogs set to work by Network Rail | Nature | News

Spaniels Rocky and Arnie have been trained by the detection dog specialist Wagtail UK to find and protect crested newts. The Network Rail teams in Hitchin called in the detective duo ahead of the major maintenance work next month. T.The innovative idea has already been tested by Natural England.

Great crested newts are a protected species that are usually found in ponds, forests, or on grassland.

But sometimes they make it to construction sites, which can lead to delay projects, as the animals then have to be captured and safely moved to a suitable habitat outside of the workplace.

Great newts are protected by law due to the drastic decline in their numbers over the past century.
